10 Tips for Tutoring Peers

Tutoring can sometimes make me feel like this!

Tutoring can sometimes make me feel like this!

Last semester I got a job as a tutor for athletes on campus.  I enjoy helping others and associating with people, therefore I thought this job would be perfect for me.  However, I have found that tutoring someone can be quite difficult and sometimes confusing.  Just knowing the content of what you are teaching is the first step, there are many other things that go into tutoring a fellow student.  Here are a couple of tips I found while researching tutoring:

  1. Take time to get acquainted
  2. Keep your student on task, if he/she brings up something off topic, offer to discuss it after the lesson
  3. Give positive praise
  4. Get students to relate to what they are learning by associating them with their life experiences
  5. Try asking students how they think they did or evaluate their own response. For example ask them, “How did you know that?”
